Stand UP

Lets get to it! I want to acknowledge that today April 27, 201., is National Denim Day and YES!!!! I am rocking my fly jeans with my stilettos today :-). Just to give you all a bit of background info on how this cause/day was created...

"An 18-year old girl is picked up by her married 45-year old driving instructor for her very first lesson. He takes her to an isolated road, pulls her out of the car, wrestles her out of one leg of her jeans and forcefully rapes her. Threatened with death if she tells anyone, he makes her drive the car home. Later that night she tells her parents, and they help and support her to press charges. The perpetrator gets arrested and is prosecuted. He is convicted of rape and sentenced to jail.

He appeals the sentence. The case makes it’s all the way to the Italian Supreme Court. Within a matter of days the case against the driving instructor is overturned, dismissed, and the perpetrator released. In a statement by the Chief Judge, he argued, “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.”

Enraged by the verdict, within a matter of hours the women in the Italian Parliament launched into immediate action and protested by wearing jeans to work. This call to action motivated and emboldened the California Senate and Assembly to do the same, which in turn spread to Patricia Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence, and Denim Day in LA was born. The first Denim Day in LA was in April 1999, and has continued every year since."

Ladies and Gentleman it is imperative that you know, as cliche as it may sound, if you are a SURVIVOR of sexual assault that IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT! Say it with me "IT IS NOT MY FAULT" "IT WAS NOT MY FAULT". No matter who the person was, how young or old you were/are and no matter the clothing you wore/wear. NOBODY has the right to violate your body or your spirit. It belongs to YOU!

Also, NEVER be afraid to get help. When I was sexually assaulted, the perpetrator continued to threaten my life while he was assaulting me.  He made vulgar comments to me that I had never heard anybody say to a human being EVER in my life. After he let me and my ex-boyfriend (whom he led to another part of the park where we were that night) go, we immediately flagged a driver down and used his cell phone to call the police. Though I felt they (the police) did not search the park like they should have, the guy was arrested a year later for sexually assaulting another young lady who was also with her boyfriend. Same month August, same place Jackson Park, different year 2009. Coincidence? NAAAAHH...That was nobody but GOD.

More on that story

Anyhow, I will digress on that, once again, for now. The objective of this particular blog post is to encourage men and women to not be afraid to GET HELP.

Do you know where your nearest Sexual Assault Center is located?

Do you know that you can receive legal and medical advocacy FREE OF CHARGE?

Do you know where your nearest Free Clinic/Hospital is located so that you may receive STD testing and preventative medicines?

Do you know that you can get help and treatment without reporting the assault to the police?

Though I do not suggest NOT reporting it to the police, some people may be afraid to do so or confused especially if the sexual assault just happened. However, by reporting it you could stop the pattern of another victim being created.

SO, today I empower and encourage you. BE BRAVE. STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS. WALK WITH YOUR HEAD HELD HIGH KNOWING "THIS WAS NOT MY FAULT". And know that healing starts with you talking to someone that you trust whether it be a counselor, friend or family member. Do NOT be afraid to STAND UP!!!!! ROCK THOSE JEANS TODAY PEOPLE!!!!!!!! And have a FANTASTIC DAY!
